The Norwegian Nobel Committee today awarded the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN, the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
In a statement, the committee said that it had decided to give the award to ICAN in recognition of its efforts to draw the attention of the international community to the tragic consequences of the use of nuclear weapons and to reach a treaty to ban such weapons.
The ICAN is a coalition of non-government organisations in 100 countries advocating for a strong and effective nuclear weapon ban treaty, and was officially launched in Vienna, Austria, in 2007.
