Chad's foreign minister, Moussa Faki Mahamat has been elected as the new chairperson of the African Union Commission on Monday.
Faki was elected during the 28th Summit of Heads of State at the AU Headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
Moussa Faki Mahamat was chosen by the 54-member body.
The other contenders included Senegal's Bathily Abdoulaye, special UN envoy for Central Africa, Botswana's foreign minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi and Equatorial Guinea's foreign minister Agapito Mba Mokuy.
Meanwhile, Guinea's President Alpha Conde has succeeded Chad's President Idris Deby as chairman of the African Union.
