Egyptian women fear Personal Status law changes
The Egyptian National Council for Women has condemned the statements made by the Shura Council undermining women’s rights in Egypt on Thursday.
The women’s group
has threatened to take domestic and international action against the Shura Council if they follow through with their intention to change the Personal Status Law.
The Personal Status Law currently protects Egyptian women\'s standing sociologically and politically.
Azza Haikal, a member of the women’s association confirmed that all participants have agreed to fight the ruling should women’s rights be violated.
She expressed her fear of losing the progress Egyptian women have made in society. Haikal added that should parliament choose to amend the law, women will struggle to restore their rights.
Another member of the National Council for Woman, Ahlam al Asmar said that a document protecting the rights of women has been issued. The bill has been recognised internationally. Asmar has appealed to Egypt’s Ministry of Justice to uphold this protection.
