Ambulance taking the body from the crime scene
An 18 year-old girl was killed Monday in Tulkarem in the northern West Bank after her father stabbed her several times.
An eye-witness said that the man killed his daughter during a struggle, after having
breakfast at their house in Tulkarem city.
Local police officials stated that the girl died in Tulkarem Hospital of the stab wounds, while investigations into the murder were ongoing.
The man reportedly left the house, knife in hand, after murdering his daughter, and drove his car to the police station where he surrendered himself.
An ambulance from the Red Crescent was called to take the girl’s body to the hospital.
Local residents told Arabstoday that the reason the father killed the girl was because she had lied to them about passing her secondary school examinations, leading her parents to throw a graduation party for her, when she had in fact failed. When the father found out about the "deception", he got angry and started fighting with her before he eventually stabbed her to death.
Relatives have in turn blamed the education ministry, stating that they published the wrong results.
The Palestinian Ministry of Education officially declared the 2012 secondary school results through displaying marks alongside students' registration numbers. An El Hayah El Gadida survey found that most people found the new system confusing.
The Palestinian Minister of Education, Lamis al-Alami, said that she was surprised some people objected to the way the results were announced, as it was drafted three years ago.
Al-Alami said the reason names were not listed so as to prevent students who did not score as highly from being embarrassed. He also denied that the Ministry of Education had any role in giving scholarship to some students at the expense of others on a non-merit basis.
