Lebanese students in Syrian universities gathering to return home
A meeting was held by a coalition of Lebanese students in Syria, in which they discussed developments in the country and the possible dangers faced by Lebanese students. Delegates agreed to arrange
an appointment with the minister of education in order to explain the suffering of Lebanese students in Syria and to be able to make recommendations in order to continue their studies.
The students said they had rights as foreign Lebanese students and appealed to the Lebanese government to support them during this tough period. One representative said: “We demand that you to treat us like you treated the other Lebanese students who were studying in Iraq when it was unstable. The unrest prevents us students from continuing our studies at university.\"
The students also demanded a series of other proposals, including the ability to return back to Lebanon and to be able to take their exams in the Syrian embassy. They also asked to be accommodated in Lebanese universities so they can continue their studies without having to drop out.
Alternatively, the delegates suggested Lebanon send some students to countries which cooperate with its cultural and educational programmes. The students were also concerned about losing money they had already spent on courses in Syria, and called on the Lebanese authorities to help secure grants to be able to continue in Lebanon or elsewhere.
Some students who have just graduated were worried about how they would obtain their degree and certificates, and asked for recommendations and allowances to be made in those circumstances.
