Kuwaiti authorities want to limit road traffic
Expatriates in Kuwait must earn a salary of at least 400 dinars ($1400) and hold a university degree to be able to apply for a driving licence.
The applicant must also prove that
they have lived in Kuwait for at least two years.The requirements are part of the government's amendments to the country's traffic laws.
According to Kuwait News Agency (Kuna), foreigners are also expected to meet the regular requirements of meeting the legal age, and being physically fit.
Kuwaiti authorities are reportedly keen to limit the number of vehicles on the country's increasingly overcrowded roads.
Exceptions to the new requirements include the wives or divorcees of Kuwaitis who had their children with them, the husbands of Kuwaiti women and their children, stateless residents who carry valid security cards, students enrolled in Kuwaiti colleges and housewives of expatriates who already possess a driving licence.
