Algerian artist Amal Boushousha
Algiers - Hocine Bousaleh

Algerian artist Amal Boushousha Finding time to contemplate and unwind is something many celebrities pine for, so when Algerian artist Amal Boushousha got the opportunity to do so, she made full use of it. Talking exclusively to Arabstoday, she said: “I’ve had an amazing period of artistic relaxation during the month of Ramadan and it has given me the chance to summon my thoughts and prepare for my upcoming cinema roles.”
She revealed that she has received many offers and scripts which she has started reading and is currently in the process of selecting the roles she would like to do.
Although Amal’s most recent television series, “Zaman al-Barghouth” did not receive the high viewing figures that were expected, as it was shown during Ramadan, she still expressed the joy she felt in playing the character in the series. “I became completely engrossed in my role” she told us, “It was definitely an unusual yet amazing experience. I had to learn to speak in a Bedouin Syrian dialect, which was not easy at first, but I succeeded in overcoming this obstacle and felt I presented the character in the best way possible.”
Amal also believed that the role was a fantastic addition to her list of work as it gave her the opportunity to work with renowned Syrian stars including Fadya Khattab and Ayman Zidan. “I do feel that I benefited from being part of this series as it allowed me to delve deeper and understand the original Levantine environment and their society’s way of thinking in more depth” Amal articulated.
When asked about the possibility of landing the role to play the princess of Arab music, the late Warda al-Jazairiya, Amal said: “Losing an icon like Warda was a great loss for the Arab world, especially during a prestigious time of Algeria’s 50th independence anniversary. However, I feel it is too early to talk about such a project as it wouldn’t be ethical or reasonable to represent Warda in a film when she has only very recently passed away. Saying this, I would be more than delighted if this role was offered to me as I have been a fan of her work from a very early age.”
Referring to the incidents taking place in the Arab world, Amal added: “I don’t understand much about politics but I definitely believe in the notion of a free person and every individual should have the right to live in peace and stability — I do hope that harmony does, however, return to all Arab countries very soon.”
