A senior Syrian opposition official has called for a central bank to established in rebel-controlled areas, to salvage the Syrian pound and make the country more accessible to the international community.
Salah al-Din al-Hamawi, a members of the Syrian National Council (SNC) argued such a move could halt the notable decline in the value of the Syrian currency.
Al-Hamawi urged the SNC to pressurise the countries interested in providing non-military assistance to the opposition groups to buy the Syrian pounds and replace them with dollars or euros.
He explained that the rebel could use the foreign currencies until the overthrow of the Syrian regime, adding such a scheme would also have a financial impact on President Bashar al-Assad\'s regime.
