On Friday, the Suez Canal witnessed the largest ever manoeuvre in Sharq el-Tafrea port, when the giant Danish container ship – the biggest of its kind in the world – was rotated 180 degrees inside the canal’s central
port.
The Edith Maersk, which is 396 meters high, 57 meters wide, and 50 feet deep and home to 15,500 containers, was supported by four tractors as it was spun in the direction of the Mediterranean.
Vice Admiral Mohab Mamish, previously Commander of the Egyptian Navy and now Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, announced that, after this success the port is capable of receiving the biggest and largest container ships in the world. He also added that that the success of this manoeuvre will attract giant container ships from around the world to Sharq el-Tafrea Port, making it a global hub for logistic and port services.
He praised those responsible for the operation and their role in the success of the task which will support the national economy and attract more cargo shipments in the future.
Captain Hossan Daoud said that this manoeuvre is the result of four years of maritime and navigation research and studies in conjunction with Dutch and English experts. A whole team of guides travelled to Netherlands and the UK to exercise the whole operation on simulators back in 2007.
The operation was the result of the cooperation between the Suez Canal Authority, Port Said Port and Maersk Line. The ship had started its journey in north Ukraine and is heading to South East of Asia.
