Arab League Secretary General Nabil El Araby
Arab League Secretary General Nabil El Araby said on Wednesday that Arab countries should put economic pressure on Israel and the international community in order force the Israelis to end their aggression on the Gaza Strip and the occupation.
\"What we did in 1973 [when Gulf countries suspended oil exports to the countries supporting Israel during Egypt-Israel war] should be done this year again,\" El Araby said in a press conference in Cairo, after returning from a visit to Gaza.
Asked about reports that the Israeli army could break into Egypt\'s Sinai in order to hunt Jihadist fighters, El Araby said Egypt is the only country concerned by this issue.
\"Invading Sinai is not subject to the Arab League stance. Such conduct would be considered an act of war, and the Egyptian army would be handling it, not the Arab League,\" said the Arab League chief.
On the Palestinian demand filed to the Arab League about holding an urgent summit of the Arab League, El Araby said this demand is being currently discussed, revealing that three countries have already approved the demand, while holding an urgent summit requires approval of at least 14 countries.
El Araby called for holding an international conference to reach a settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict \"if the UN Security Council keeps failing to hold its responsibilities and putting its resolutions into effect.\"
Speaking about the damage he witnessed in Gaza during his Tuesday visit, the Arab League chief said: \"Everywhere I went I saw destruction. All the targeted sites were civilian houses and facilities. This aggression is the shame on humanity,\" he concluded.
