Women on Walls (WOW) will be showcasing graffiti at the GrEEK Campus as part of the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (DCAF) programme from 3-7 April 2015.
The WOW project was launched in early 2013 with the aim of using graffiti to both focus on women's issues and rights, and to empower female graffiti artists. Back in 2013, over 40 artists brought graffiti art to the streets of four Egyptian cities: Mansoura, Alexandria, Cairo and Luxor.
WOW returns now as part of their cooperation with DCAF. According to the WOW organisers, this year the project is themed "Unchained," and they hope to "express the female hero succeeding in being unchained from all the anger and the fear that is controlling us."
Some 20 artists from Egypt, Sweden and the Arab region will be participating in the five-day workshop held at the GrEEK Campus of the American University in Cairo. The public is invited to participate in the graffiti making experience from 6-7 April by leaving their mark on the Open Wall, near Youssef Al-Guindy Street.
The event will culminate with an evening at Vent, a downtown location operating as a bar and restaurant and often hosting artistic performances.
