A new dictionary intended for non-Arabic speakers who hope to learn the Emirati dialect, featuring phrases and sentences that are often used by the Emirati people in all walks of life, has been published in Abu Dhabi.
The first edition of the "Emirati Ramsa", published by the Poetry Academy at the Cultural Programmes and Heritage Festivals Committee – Abu Dhabi, provides the translation of about 1,500 Emirati words into English.
Specialised in the vocabulary of the Emirati dialect, the ‘Ramsa' dictionary is academically approved. It is supplemented with the accurate pronunciation form in order to make it easier for the readers to properly use and pronounce the different words. The knowledge of this vocabulary would help the readers learn more about the authentic Emirati culture.
The dictionary targets both foreign and Arab residents who are non-proficient in this dialect as well as Emiratis who hold a special interest in the local vernacular.
The preface to the booklet contains a quotation by the celebrated politician, Nelson Mandela: "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart."
The authors of the booklet are keen on providing the reader with much benefit from the everyday vernacular, regardless of the cultural background or age category. The dictionary can actually help learners from all walks of life, notably corporate managers, sales staff as well as children and students.
The Poetry Academy – Abu Dhabi is the first literary institution specialised in Academic studies of Arab poetry, both classical and Nabati. The idea of its establishment comes to complement the deep interest and attention that the Emirate of Abu Dhabi accords to literature and culture, including poetry which stands for an important and authentic reference in the Arab history.
In its annual programme, the Academy seeks to promote poetry-related cultural activities, and organises lectures, research seminars and literary workshops, with the participation of researchers, and those interested in the field of poetry from around the world.
The Academy is working toward the creation of a public library specialised in the studies and publications of popular culture, including all its aspects and fields.
