Egyptian film maker, Youssef Chahine This weekend sees the continuation of the fifth Panorama of the European Film. The festival is run by Misr International Films, widely regarded as the most prestigious film company in the region,
Having been set up back in 1972 by the world-renowned Egyptian film maker, Youssef Chahine.
While Egypt has, by some distance, the largest film audience in the Middle East, a vast majority of these are either local productions or American blockbusters. However, the Panorama of the European Film aims to promote the rich diversity of European cinema, which is almost non-existent in the country.
The festival, which started last Wednesday and is running until Tuesday, will show an array of films from countries across Europe, including both fiction and documentaries, with the aim of expanding the horizons of Egyptian filmgoers and filmmakers alike.
The selection this year is a diverse spread from all across the continent, from the usual suspects such as Britain, France and Italy, to more niche markets including Norway, Poland and Switzerland.
