Ultras Ahlawy attacked by police
Zamalek board member Sherine Fawzy says that Tuesday’s clashes between Ahly supporters and local police may affect Zamalek’s centenary celebrations.
“The situation may become
complicated now as the British embassy might report that it’s not safe to host their first division club Liverpool in Cairo,” Zamalek board member who is in charge of the club’s centenary celebrations, Fawzy, told Ahram Online.
The clashes took place during the round of 32 Egypt Cup match between Egyptian Premier League’s champions Ahly and second division club Kima Aswan which the Cairo-based side won 4-0.
Zamalek were supposed to host Liverpool in a friendly game in the Cairo stadium on 18 or 19 October amid anniversary festivities, according to the centenary committee, but it seems harder now to ensure security in the stands after the violent clash between Egyptian football supporters and the police, which around 140 injured from both sides.
One of Egypt's oldest clubs, Zamalek, established in 5 January 1911, were set to hold their 100 year anniversary festivities some months ago, but the celebrations were postponed with the country in the grips of the 25 January revolution.
The Cairo-based club initially approached Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan to host one of them in the their centenary ceremony but was deterred by the financial demands along with security concerns.
Zamalek have won the Egyptian league title 11 times and the Egypt Cup on 21 occasions. Their success also extends beyond Egypt, having won five African Champions League trophies and many other championships.
