Coach for Indianapolis Tony Dungy
Tony Dungy, who won Super Bowls as a player for Pittsburgh and coach for Indianapolis, was named a finalist Thursday in voting for pro football's Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame officials announced Thursday the 25 semifinalists had
been trimmed to 15 and Dungy was one of four candidates who made the finals in their first year of eligibility.
He was joined in that regard by linebacker Derrick Brooks, tackle Walter Jones and receiver Marvin Harrison, who played for Dungy when the Colts captured the Super Bowl over Chicago at the end of the 2006 season.
Dungy also was a defensive back for the Super Bowl XIII champion Steelers.
Those who made the finals last year and are back for consideration include running back Jerome Bettis, wide receivers Tim Brown and Andre Reed, offensive lineman Will Shields, defensive linemen Charles Haley and Michael Strahan, linebacker Kevin Greene, defensive back Aeneas Williams and former San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo.
Kicker Morten Andersen and safety John Lynch also were included in the list of 15 finalists from the modern era.
The senior committee has also nominated punter Ray Guy and defensive end Claude Humphrey to be considered for election.
This year's Hall of Fame class will be determined during a meeting of the selection committee on Feb. 1, the day before the Super Bowl.
