New Zealand's Scott Dixon, the defending IndyCar season champion, started last in a field of 22 but battled to the front to win the Indy 200.
Dixon collected his 34th career IndyCar triumph, his fifth career victory at Mid-Ohio and his third at the course in four years. The Kiwi racer also won at the track in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012.
It was Dixon's first triumph of the year and also the first of the season for Chip Ganassi Racing, whose drivers have won six in a row at the 2.258-mile, 13-turn layout.
A fuel gamble late in the race on Sunday paid off for Dixon, whose last stop came on lap 62 of 90. Dixon seized the lead for good with 23 laps remaining and finished 5.4 seconds ahead of runner-up Sebastian Bourdais, the pole sitter from France.
Dixon's car ran out of gas in the first turn after he took the checkered flag, forcing him to walk to the winner's circle.
Canada's James Hinchcliffe was third with Colombian rookie Carlos Munoz fourth and American Graham Rahal fifth.
Australia's Will Power finished sixth but that was enough to seize a four-point lead over Brazil's Helio Castroneves, Power's Penske Racing teammate, in the season title chase with three races remaining.
Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Castroneves, who began the race with a 13-point edge, finished 19th.
The IndyCar season concludes with races on August 17 at Milwaukee, August 24 at Sonoma and August 30 at Fontana, California.
