Nafi: We are capable of sabotaging opposition plots
Khartoum – Abedalgoum Ashmeag
Sudan’s Vice President al-Haj Adam, has warned that signatories of the Sudanese opposition’s New Dawn Charter will be banned from politics. \"We will not accept any political activity, not even among university students, until these parties disown the charter,\" he said.
Speaking at a meeting in the central state of al-Jazirah, the Vice President described opposition parties, who met in Uganda’s capital, Kampala to sign a radical anti-government declaration of intent, as part of “a political machine plotting the destruction of the country from abroad.”
\"The government and its agencies are capable of sabotaging the plots of the opposition and armed groups,\" insisting that Charter signatories will be held accountable before the law.
Adam accused the opposition of imposing secularism on Sudan, meanwhile renewing his country’s commitment to sharia.
Presidential adviser Nafi Ali Nafi also launched a stinging attack on the Sudanese Communist Party, according to him, the party chiefly responsible for the New Dawn Charter.
Speaking at a press conference in Khartoum on Monday, Nafi claimed: \"The American embassy in Kampala and the European Union provided the funding for the Sudanese opposition\'s conference in Kampala.\"
The new document, which calls for a new transitional government following the peaceful overthrow of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, reflected \"the magnitude of international plots and conspiracies\" against Sudan, Nafi said. The groups behind it, he claimed, were “unwittingly” aiding “Western plots” to break up the country.
“There is a Western-Zionist plot to break Sudan apart,” the adviser claimed.
Nafi meanwhile congratulated parties distancing themselves from the New Dawn Charter, including the Popular Congress Party [PCP], led by Hasan al-Turabi, in an unprecedented move since the latter\'s break with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 1999.
Information Minister and government spokesperson, Ahmed Belal Osman, also told Arabstoday on Monday that the opposition document had \"exposed\" signatories\' \"true intentions.” He slammed any hopes for secularism, adding: \"This is not new to these people, especially the leaders of the armed Darfurian groups, including the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Mohammed Nour.\"
The government spokesperson claimed that the Charter will find \"no supporters\" because it is \"shocking to the Sudanese people\'s sensibilities.\"
In response to Nafi\'s accusation against Western powers, including the US embassy in Kampala, Osman said: \"Some circles are doubtlessly involved in stoking the fires of conflict in Sudan, and they have been working since 1999 to topple and besiege the ruling regime.\"
Sudan’s Information Minister meanwhile accused the Ugandan government of being a “tool” used “to carry out the plots of Sudan’s enemies.” Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni had been “endeavouring to bring Sudan down for years,” he added.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has joined a host of top government officials in slamming the New Dawn Charter, accusing its signatories of treason.
