Moussa Touati has been elected for the next 5 years
Moussa Touati has been re-elected as leader of the Algerian National Front (FNA), at the party\'s third annual conference in Algiers.
Speaking after the victory, Touati called for the the formation of a national charter, which could be put before the public in a referendum to determine the nature of the government in Algeria.
He also also dismissed rumours of his candidacy in the upcoming Algerian presidential elections, even though \"the party is participating in every election in the country.\"
At the third conference of the Algerian National Front, candidates for the National Assembly were also selected, along with the approval of three committee reports. The party\'s basic electoral policy was reviewed and amended in order to \"adopt a political strategy to ensure the party\'s standing in the political arena.\" The policy outlines how the party’s national structures are regulated. In the new law, the conference approved \"reducing the number of the National Council members from 207 to 107 and the development of four regional committees with established offices at national level.\"
Touati said that the preparation of a national charter will determine the kind of governance in the country, whether it\'s a parliamentary, presidential or semi-presidential system. He added that putting this charter to public in a referendum and then amending the constitution based on the result is a priority for the next phase. He admitted that the Front is in favour of a parliamentary system but must respect the will of the people.
Touati said that the party remains a key player in Algerian politics, denying that the recent decline in performance compared to the results of 2007 elections has had an impact. \"The statistics and figures indicate that the Front’s support has not changed,\" he said. He also expressed his happiness at the way the conference was organised, saying it was \"calm without any skirmishes or clashes between the attendants.\"
He emphasised that \"the conference was open to everyone, including the real opposition within party activists.\" He also refused to listen to the opposition exercising politics through the media, stressing that \"some media outlets\" are waging a propaganda campaign against his party, which played a part in destabilising his political formation. He added that \"the judicial body should decide on disputes, not the media.\"
