Six security soldiers injured in riots in Jordan\'s Zaatari camp Riots erupted Sunday afternoon at Jordan\'s Zaatari Refugee Camp for Syrians in Mafraq province (70km north-east Amman) after Jordanian security forces apprehended three young men who attempted to leave the camp illegally. Security forces responsible for protecting the refugee camps entrances detained the three men after they reportedly attempted to break out, which is not allowed to the refugees by the local authorities.
Security forces were called to the camp and tear gas was fired to disperse the crowds.
Six security soldiers were injured after rioters burnt a security kiosk and hurled rocks at the policemen and security forces.
Official sources told Arabstoday that 800 Syrian refugees were settled in the camp after they entered Jordan on Friday, the first day of Eid al-Adha. The 800 refugees included 13 people who were injured in attacks carried out by the Syrian army against rebels.
The sources added that the Jordanian border guards refused the entry of a Syrian defected army officer who sought to flee to the country.
Early in October, police used tear gas to disperse Syrian refugees at the Zaatari Camp after they set fire to tents and destroyed property in protest of their living conditions.
In late August, over 20 security officers were injured in riots by Syrian refugees, which followed a march by around 200 Syrians to protest against the lack of basic facilities and infrastructure at the camp.
After the incident, former Jordanian Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh - who was in charge then - said the government would repatriate Syrian refugees responsible for the riots to \"where they came from\".
The Zaatari Refugee Camp is home to some 40,000 Syrian refugees.
Jordan is currently hosting over 200,000 Syrians who have escaped the ongoing violence in their country. UN figures show that over 85,000 refugees are registered in Jordan, with around a further 36,000 waiting process.
