Mauritania holds high-ranking militant in capital Nouakchott

Mauritanian security forces have revealed the location of a leading member of an Islamist group – Sanda Ould Bouamama, after he surrendered himself to the army several months
ago on the border with Mali.
Bouamama, who was the spokesperson for rebel movement Ansar-Din, was said to be held at a military intelligence unit in the capital of Nouakchott.
A military source said Bouamama was being provided by security protection following his surrender to the army.
According to the source the compound is allowed access from foreign officials who wish conduct investigations into subjects held at the base, without naming from which country’s in particular.
Bouamama was an influential member of the militant group which controls the cities of Tempikto and Kidal.
He surrendered himself after being promised a fair trial, following mediation from a number of politicians.
