Amman - Eman Abu Quaoud
Jordan\'s House of Representatives has 120 elected members Jordan’s House of Representatives is set to choose from three key candidates for its new speaker on Sunday, with two contenders relying on support from their parliamentary blocks, while the other is hopeful his parliamentary experience will pull him though.
Jordanian Parliamentarian Ahmed el-Haj is the strong favourite, with support from a number of parliamentary coalitions, including the Islamic Block of Wasat, Watan Block led by Atef el-Tarawna and the Independents led by Hazem Qashwa. The tri-block coalition could pave the way for Haj to win the seat of the speaker with it 80 members.
A second coalition comprising the Democratic unionist for reform led by the leftist parliamentarian Mustafa Shenikat, and the Free Promise Block led by Amgad el-Galy is also likely to field a candidate. The coalition includes 45 parliamentarians, while it could also attract support independent members.
Amid the conflict of coalitions, independent member of parliament Saad Hayel el-Sorour has also thrown his name in the hand. El-Sorour is a well-known political veteran  with experience as Interior Minister. His decision to run for speaker is seen as an unprecedented move reflecting the political conflict between the parliamentary coalition to form the coming government, as the Jordanian King promised to form the new government through parliamentary consultations.
The choice of the speaker of Jordan’s House of Representatives would pave the way for the political coalition to prepare for choosing the new Prime Minister and the new government that would formulate the political future of Jordan.
