Rocket hits an uninhabited area in the Negev, southern Israel
Israel could take escalatory measures against Hamas in the Gaza Strip after rockets hit the south of the Jewish state as it commemorated the Holocaust.Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP
that a rocket landed in an uninhabited area of the Negev desert, while security sources claimed several rockets were fired from Gaza on Sunday evening. No casualties or damage were inflicted, police said.
Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon had previously warned on Wednesday that his country would respond to any attacks on its territory and not allow its people to come under fire.
Israeli Southern Command officers are set to meet to discuss further actions, which could see Gaza’s economic blockade tightened.
Israel holds Hamas responsible for the attacks, although no single group has yet claimed responsibility.
On Monday, Israel closed the Kerem Shalom border crossing with the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian border official Raed Fattouh.
There have been four cases of rocket fire from Gaza into Israel since late February, three of which were claimed by Salafist militants inside the coastal territory.
