Senior Hamas officials Khaled Meshaal (L) and Ismail Haniyeh
Chairman of Palestinian group Hamas\' Political Bureau, Khaled Meshaal, and Gazan Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh have arrived in Cairo to hold talks with Egyptian officials about
Palestinian reconciliation, and wider developments in the region.
Sources at Cairo International Airport told Arab Today that the 11-member Hamas delegation led by Meshaal arrived from Doha on Friday. They added that three Hamas members who were previously barred from entering Egypt by security officials were given the all-clear. Mohamed Ahmed Abdel Dayem, Mahmoud Darwish and Ahmed Eleiwa were allowed to fly into Cairo with the rest of the group.
A separate 12-man delegation led by Haniyeh crossed into Egypt through the Rafah border crossing on Friday evening.
Political sources said that the main aim of the visit is to discuss Palestinian reconciliation, denying reports that the Muslim Brotherhood is using Hamas as a political tool before the anti-government demonstrations in Egypt on June 30.
Gazan sources Arab Today that Haniyeh would meet several senior Egyptian officials to discuss Palestinian reconciliation and Egyptian-Palestinian relations.
Speaking before the trip, the head of the Gaza government denied reports of political differences between Hamas leaders, claiming such rumours are aimed at breaking the resistance movement\'s resolve.
Haniyeh made it clear that the Palestinian faction has never interfered in Egypt\'s internal affairs and would not do so, adding that Hamas only challenges Israeli occupation.
The Palestinian politician praised both the Egyptian government and the Egyptian people for their courteous welcome.
Haniyeh denied that Hamas members are fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad\'s forces in Syria, and reiterated the groups policy towards the Syrian conflict as based around putting the interests of Syrian people first.
