Egypt\'s Dar al-Ifta in Cairo
Egypt\'s Dar al-Ifta, the institute of Islamic legal research, has warned anti-government demonstrators against attacking state institutions during protests scheduled for June 30.
The educational body within al-Azhar reiterated Egyptians\' right to peaceful protest.
In a statement, Egyptian mufti Dr Shawki Alam said that people must exercise their right to protest, peacefully. He urged citizens and political parties to come together during the current crisis.
The Islamic scholar also argued that media organisations must think about the national interest when performing their role. He added that al-Azhar\'s edict renouncing violence had been put together following an agreement with various political parties. The mufti claimed that state authorities must protect citizens on June 30.
Earlier this month, Grand Imam of al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb persuaded several Egyptian political parties to sign an agreement renouncing violence.
After the signing, several Islamist parties called for a million man march in front of Rabaa al-Adaweya mosque in Nasr City on June 21, under the slogan No To Violence.
