London - Arabstoday

Plan a weekend holiday to Kodanad, the land of elephants, just 45 km from Kochi. If you are looking for a weekend holiday spot, look no further than Kodanad - the land of elephants on the banks of the Periyar about 30 km from Kochi city. Kodanad has a fascinating sobriquet, an 'elephants' orphanage.' Tourists from all over the world flock to Kodanad to get a glimpse of the elephants and swim in the river, which is yet another refreshing experience that you would not want to miss. But it's surprising to know that it's not only the tourists who come to enjoy Kodanad. Even film and documentary makers find the place irresistible. Look out for... Elephant kraal made of wooden compartments, which can accomodate up to four elephants, are a prime attractions of this small village. Here, there are elephants not less than 10 years old trained for temple festivals and also to transport timber. Tourists can go on a pilgrimage to the Malayatoor Church which is situated on the other side of the banks of the Periyar. The pristine jungle on the either side is an ideal spot for adventure lovers. Kodanad also houses a mini-zoo where you can see the elephants being fed. Fun unlimited The Kodanad Park has facilities for elephant safari and the mahouts would assist you throughout the journey. You can watch elephants being bathed if you reach the place by 8 am. To avoid polluting the water from the Periyar, which is used by the locals in the vicinity, the elephants are brought to the banks of the river about 1 km away from the park. The tourists can lend a helping hand while the mahouts scrub the elephants using coconut husks or even play with them. You can go for trekking too. The government has also set up an eco-friendly village at Kaprikkad, 3 km from Kodanad, for the tourists. How to get there Situated just 45 km from the city, cabs can be hired to get there. Kodanad is 65 km away from the Cochin International Airport. Take the shot cut through Kalady. There are a few trains from Kalady to Kodanad. Your stay Thani Illam, an eco-friendly homestay in Thottuva near Kodanad, will make your trip a pleasant and memorable one. Home-made and healthy vegetarian food, doctor on call, ayurvedic treatments, yoga, meditation, tantric rituals, and classes on various topics, facility to make ISD and STD calls, internet connection, and travel assistance are some of the attractions of this homestay. So, now you know where to head to this weekend!
