a plan to develop the transport system
Dubai - Arab Today

The Department of Transport has unveiled a plan to develop the transport system in and around the rapidly growing Al Gharbia.

The department's Surface Transport Master Plan will expand road networks and public transport, and extend Etihad Rail projects.

New roads and intersections will serve cities including Madinat Zayed, Ruwais, Ghayathi, Sila and Baynunah, while public transport improvements are also due, with more buses and taxis.

The area is primed for investment, covering 60,000 square kilometres and home to a mix of industries and residential communities.

Al Gharbia has a growing population and covers 83 per cent of Abu Dhabi, while contributing 40 per cent to its gross domestic product.

It is in a prime location for improved transport links, said Badr Al Qamzi, director of integrated transport planning.

"The Surface Transport Master Plan in the Western Region to develop suitable transport that would be integrated in the extensive strategy for all transport systems is in line with Abu Dhabi 2030 Vision,” Mr Al Qamzi said.

Al Gharbia is a vital link for freight from Abu Dhabi and Dubai to the rest of the GCC.

Long-term and medium-term projects are due for completion between 2017 and 2030.

Planners hope the improvements to road networks, bridges, tunnels and signs will help achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly transport system that is safe for users.

The project is the latest stage of transport developments in the emirate.

In October, the Jalboot passenger ferry launched from stations at the Corniche, Al Bandar and the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island.
