In a tribute to the genre of documentary and non-fiction films, Zawya is curating “Hybrid Reels: Revisiting Documentary,” a programme running from 6 to 26 May, screening over 20 films produced between the years of 1922 and 2015.
The aim is to further expose the genre of non-fiction films to Egyptian audiences, and to affirm how reality can be just as rich as fiction.
Over the course of three weeks, the programme is divided into three sections: Narratives, Anthropology on the Screen/Beginnings, and Highlights.
The first group of screenings, Narratives, will run between 6 to 12 May, and will launch with a homage to Egyptian actress Soad Hosny- The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosny- by Rania Stephan. The documentary used archived footage to tell the actress’s life story, which is juxtaposed with the decline of Egyptian cinema.
