Factory Girl follows the story of a young woman, Hayam (Yasmeen El-Raees) who works in a textile factory and falls in love with her boss (Hany Adel). The film pays special homage to silver screen icon Soad Hosny.
The film was commercially released in Egypt in March last year and grossed over one million Egyptian pounds - a hefty sum given that it was not released in the country's official cinema season. It is Khan's twenty-fourth film, but his first release in seven years.
Factory Girl has been screened at several festivals, and won two awards at the Dubai International Film Festival in December 2013: the Muhr Arab Feature Best Actress Award for El-Raees, and the coveted FEPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Best Arab Feature award.
Khan, 71, is one of Egypt’s most prominent directors. His comes from a generation of neo-realist filmmakers that represent one of the hallmarks of Egyptian cinema. Three of his films — El-Harreef (The Street Player, 1984), Zawgat Ragol Mohem (The Wife of an Important Man, 1987) and Ahlam Hind wa Camilia (Dreams of Hind and Camilia, 1988) — were included among the "100 Greatest Arab Films" of the Dubai International Film Festival.
