Neill Blomkamp said his Alien movie would be a "genetic sibling" to the second movie in the four-film franchise and could continue telling the story of Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver.
Blomkamp and Weaver confirmed the actress is reprising her role as the protagonist of the series for the South African director's movie. The two discussed their ideas for the film with Sky Movies while promoting their latest movie together, Chappie.
Weaver said the upcoming addition to the Alien franchise -- currently without at title -- would give Ripley a "proper finish."
"I would love to take Ripley out of sort of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story," Weaver said.
"I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens," Blomkamp said. "So it's Alien, Aliens, this movie."
It's unclear if Blomkamp's idea is to completely disregard the existence of the third and fourth movies in the franchise, also starring Weaver: Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection.
Blomkamp announced last week he had been tapped to helm the latest movie and even posted an artist's concept of the title creature. He previously directed sci-fi films District 9 and Elysium -- both of which grossed more than $200 million each at the box office. His next film Chappie, about robots with artificial intelligence, is set to hit U.S. theaters March 6.
The plot of the fifth Alien movie takes place after Prometheus and its sequel, the latter of which is currently in production. The Prometheus movies are considered pseudo prequels to the Alien franchise, sharing the same world but not the same characters.
Director Ridley Scott, who was behind the 1979 Alien film, is also the director of both Prometheus films.
