Zoya Akhtar has announced her next directorial venture and has roped in Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh for the lead roles.
Titled Gully Boy, the film is about the lives of street rappers in who live in chawls in Mumbai. Akhtar and Singh spent some time researching for the film with two street rappers Naezy and Divine, who also featured in a documentary titled Bombay 70. The film is expected to start shooting in November this year.
The only time the lead stars were seen together on screen was for an advertisement for the travel portal Makemytrip.com, where the audience loved their pairing.
While Singh is currently shooting for Padmavati with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bhatt is preparing for the release of her film Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya opposite Varun Dhawan.
The duo are currently the hottest stars in Bollywood – Bhatt had a great run at the box office last year, and was also lauded for her roles in Dear Zindagi, Udta Punjab and Kapoor & Sons. Even though Singh hit a bump in the road with Befikre last year, it did not make much of a difference as far as his star power is concerned.
Both actors are known to get into the skin of their character and experimenting with new roles, and will be a delight to watch on screen together.
