Dubai's Baniyas Square received a facelift with the Dubai Municipality renovating the timeworn fountain in the once most bustling area of old Dubai.
It took about Dh400,000 to complete the 10-month long restoration work. The shape and size of the fountain has been maintained, officials said while opening the renovated fountain.
"The municipality is keen on preserving the heritage environment and nature in the square,” Director-General of Dubai Municipality, Hussain Nasser Lootah said. "The construction and heritage of the neighbourhood were considered in the architectural design of the fountain.”
He said the structure of the fountain has been re-designed, but the originality of the 1970s — when it was built — has been maintained. "The aim is to conserve our historical values, along with making some adjustments on the base that holds the fountain.”
He underlined the persistence of the municipality in re-launching the fountain. It is the result of the municipality's tireless efforts and keenness to preserve the cultural legacy of the nation.
