Kenyan police on Thursday reopened four mosques closed over terror activities in the country's coastal city of Mombasa.
The four, Masjid Shuhadaa, Masjid Sakina, Masjid Mina and Masjid Swafaa, have been handed over to the select individuals who are charged with their management.
Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa said the four will be under the leadership of moderate Muslim elders selected by Muslim communities.
Marwa said the government set strict conditions that will ensure the smooth running of the four mosques perceived to be the hotbed of radicalization that is blamed for a spate of insecurity in the tourist resort city.
"The four will be monitored to ensure no radical activities takes place. We want peace to be restored in places of worship, and the state cannot allow places to turn to dens for criminal gangs," the government official said.
