Iran has made major advances in the field of stem cell technology and research, a senior medical official said, reiterating that the country is now regarded as a pioneering state in the field. “Appropriate scientific infrastructure is now available for the development of stem cell treatments,” Head of Digestion and Liver Studies Center, affiliated to the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Mohammad Baqer Laijani told reporters on the sidelines of the International Embryo Festival in Tehran on Wednesday. Elaborating on the expertise needed in the field, he said using embryonic stem cells should take place in accordance with pre-specified framework. “The stem cell treatment is of high importance because certain dimensions of treatment and safety of patients are (still) unknown,” Larijani said. In the recent years, Iranian scientists and experts have taken wide leaps in scientific, medical and technological fields. Iran has made giant progress in stem cell science in the past years and is now revered as a world pioneering country in the area. The country has also taken wide strides in other areas of medical science as well and is now producing unique drugs and medication for several types of cancer and AIDS treatment.
