Morocco aims to lead the race to provide 4G in Africa
Morocco plans to launch tenders for 4G (fourth generation) mobile phone licences by the end of the year, the Telecommunications Regulatory National Agency’s
spokesperson has told Arabstoday.
The move would mean Morocco is the first country in the African continent to offer 4G services.
The spokesperson said that the plan to launch 4G services will go ahead after cabinet’s approval.
Morocco\'s telecom watchdog had originally planned to sell at least one 4G licence in the fourth quarter of last year, but the plans were delayed, with no specific reason mentioned.
Morocco\'s telecommunications market is dominated by Vivendi\'s Maroc Telecom, which is being sold, France Telecom affiliate Medi Telecom, and Inwi, owned by a holding company controlled by the Moroccan monarchy and Kuwait\'s Zain Telecom.
