H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, has ratified an incentive programme to promote the use of electric cars in Dubai, which was presented by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA, and Dubai Municipality at the 45th meeting of the Supreme Council of Energy.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council, was present at the meeting, while other attendees included Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council, Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of the Emirates National Oil Company, Abdullah Abdul Kareem, Director-General of the Department of Oil Affairs, Khalid Mohammed Sharif, Assistant Director-General for the Health, Safety and Environment Control division at Dubai Municipality, Waleed Salman, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Nuclear Energy Committee, Nasser Abu Shehab, CEO of the Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector at the Roads and Transport Authority, Frederick Chemin, General Manager of Dubai Petroleum, and Simon Cattle, General Manager of Dubai Supply Authority, DUSUP.
The Supreme Council issued directive Number 01 of 2016 that government institutions must ensure that 10 percent of all new purchases of fleet vehicles are of hybrid or electric vehicles. This will support the target for 2020 for 2 percent of all vehicles to be hybrid or electric, and by 2030 this will rise to 10 percent. This will help to reduce total carbon emissions in Dubai by 2021 by 19 percent.
Al Tayer said, "To implement the demand side management strategy to reduce the consumption of energy and water by 30 percent by 2030, we discussed the results of the first phase of the Dubai Water Resources Management Study, and ways to improve operational efficiency and increase the capacity of the wastewater network. The demand side management strategy features 9 energy demand management programmes that include green building specifications and regulations, retrofitting existing buildings, district cooling, reuse of wastewater, laws and specifications for upgrading standards and efficiency of appliances, and the efficiency of street lighting."
"We have also followed through with the Dubai Lamp project to improve energy efficiency, developed by Dubai Municipality in cooperation with Philips," added Al Tayer.
