On Monday, athletics competitions of the Second Arab Women Sports Tournament hosted in Sharjah were launched. The competitions took place at Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped, and saw UAE athletes pick up 6 medals, 5 gold and one silver, in various games. The first day of competition was attended by Sheikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Senior Vice President of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees, Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmad bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of The Supreme Organisation Committee of the Tournament, Ibrahim Abdul Malik , the Secretary-General of the Public Authority for Youth Welfare and Sports, Counsellor Ahmad Al Kamali, President of the UAE Athletics Federation (UAEAF), Tariq Sultan bin Khadim, Deputy Chairman of the UAE Disabled Sports Federation and Chairman of Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped and Khamis bin Salim Al Sweidi, former Chairman of Sharjah Club, in addition to a number of sports figures. In the competitions, Hajar Saeed Alsaidi of Al Shabab Al Fatat Bahraini Club received the gold medal in the 100m race, recording a time of 12:31 seconds, followed by her club mate, Faten Abdulnabi Jasim, as a runner-up recording 12:92 seconds, leaving the third position to Duha Idrees from Areeha Club from Palestine, recording 13:16 seconds. The first gold medal for the UAE was won by Sharjah Ladies Club's athlete Betlahm Disa Lesion, who came first in the 400m race recording 1:02:79 minutes, followed by Areeha's Sandra Jarayta recording 1:20:95 minutes, and third place was taken by Layla Shareef Alashmari from Yemen Al Fatayat Club, in a time of 1:24:25 minutes. The second Emirati gold medal came when Alya Mohammed Saeed won the 5000m race. Saeed's runner-up was Malayeen Al Shabbi of Yemen Fatayat Club, followed by Intisar Mohssen Al Mudhaffar from the same club. The long jump gold medal went to Mariam Mohammed Al Ansari from the Bahrain club, who recorded 5.21 meters, followed by Bahraini Al Shabab Club athlete Sabrin Youssef, who recorded 5.17 m, leaving third place to Badya Camara of Qatar Ladies Club, recording 5.07 m. In shot put competitions, the UAE increased its gold medal tally, thanks to Mariam Salim Alsaadi, who won the gold with a throw of 11.86 meters. Jordam Women Club athlete Lina Qeddis came second with 10.82 m, followed by Basma Mohammed Abdo of Bahraini Al Shabab Club, who recorded 10.56 m. In the javelin throw, SLC athlete Hanan Ibraheem won another gold medal for the UAE recording 28.27 m, leaving the runner-up position to Marwa Al Jasmi, also from SLC, who recorded 25.68. The third position was occupied by Fatin Jassim from the Bahraini Al Shabab Club, recording 4.22 m. SLC also gained the gold medal in the 4 x 400 meters relay, followed by Yemen Al Fatayat Club. Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmad bin Sultan Al Qasimi reaffirmed that the third AWST will also include equine sports, and that it is expected to see an even higher level of participation from Arab countries. – Emirates News Agency, WAM Source: WAM
