Hollywood actress and UN Refugee Agency special envoy Angelina Jolie has arrived in the Turkish border province of Mardin where she will visit refugees from Syria and Iraq on Saturday.
Jolie arrived in Mardin with a private jet on Friday night. Jolie will accompany UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who will visit refugee camps in the Akçakaya neighborhood on the occasion of World Refugee Day on Saturday, Today's Zaman newspaper reported.
The camps host 2,378 Iraqi Yazidis and 3,047 Syrians.
The Hollywood actress also visited Syrian refugee camps in the Turkish provinces of Gaziantep and Kilis together with Guterres in 2012.
Turkey hosts around 1.6 million refugees and has spent $5.6 billion to accommodate Syrian refugees, whose number is around 1.6 million according to the Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
According to a recent report by the Amnesty International (AI), 4 million people have fled Syria and sought refuge in neighboring countries Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt and some 50 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes.
