Up the road from Trenton, at Princeton University, the next leaders of the world are being educated. Some of them have already started influencing change while pursuing their degree. The Princeton Dream Team, a community-based organization of Princeton University students have come together to advocate for undocumented immigrant students. Many of the students that are part of the Princeton Dream Team share an immigrant background themselves. The group seeks to push for immigration reform, raise awareness of immigrant-related causes, and reach out to and provide resources to the Princeton immigrant community. In the past the group has worked with local organizations such as the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund to raise money for their Chasing-A-Dream Scholarship to financially assist immigrant students attending college. The elite students have also lobbied Congress for comprehensive immigration reform and for an end to deportations. They also organize petition drives, hold weekly detention center visits in Elizabeth and provide mentorship for high school students. Christina Chica and Jessica Martinez, both sophomores at the Ivy League school lead the program in raising awareness about the plight of immigrants on campus. According to a study conducted by the University of California-Merced, it found that the Obama administration is on track to deport a record 2 million people by 2014. If the rate continues, it will surpass the total amount of people deported between 1892 to 1997. Source: Education News
