Birzeit University’s position as one of Palestine’s leading research universities has been solidified by the results of a recent study produced by the university’s Graduate Studies Faculty.
The university has the best reputation for research among Palestinian universities in terms of the numbers of its scientific publications, records of citations and excellence in teaching faculty.
The study based its results on two indicators: findings in SCORUS, which is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, and H-index, an author-level metric based on the scientists’ most cited papers and the number of citations that he or she has received in other publications.
The total number of Birzeit University’s publications was 799. SCORUS indexed 8,718 citations from university publications, with an average of 10.9 citations per article. For H-index, Birzeit University came in 43rd for the number of citations, which means that the publication is cited by others an average of at least 43 times.
Birzeit University teaching faculty and scholars also placed as Palestine’s top-ranked scholars based on SCORUS and H-index. Three scholars topped the top ten list of SCORUS and four of them were in the H-index group of the best ten scholars in Palestine.
The study included a number of statistics about Palestinian publications issued between the year 1996 and 2014. It indicated that Palestinian publications were more than 500 in 2014, and as a result, the state ranked 111 among 239 country listed on SCImago Journal & Country rank, a portal that includes journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus date base. Palestine also ranked 127 and 133 rank in the H-index.
