The Student Activities Department at Qatar University has organised separate closing ceremonies for men and women for its summer programme: “Our Summer is Healthy and Fit”. The programme was held to engage QU students and others during the summer vacation, through many activities such as fitness training, religious lectures, trips and field visits to a number of cultural and recreational sites within Qatar. Commenting on the women’s ending day, Fatima al-Naemi, facility co-ordinator, said: “We aim to attract students to participate and benefit from the summer programme. What differentiates this year’s activities is that we welcomed members from outside QU to register and attend the diverse sessions offered.” The programme included a series of workshops and training sessions in different fields that enhanced the women’s skills and helped them discover hobbies. The training sessions included swimming classes at Sheikh Jawaan Primary Independent School, equestrian and shooting sessions. According to Reem al-Boainain, administrative co-ordinator in the section of sports and recreation, this year’s activities were exceptional in terms of the expert trainers who were able to transfer their professional experience and skills to the female participants. “We welcomed more than 62 participants with their friends and relatives.” Hend al-Temaimi, a participant, said: “I decided to register in this programme to spend summer time by learning new things, advancing my skills, and making new friends. The most interesting and invaluable sessions were the crochet classes, in which I learned to make pillows, table and bed covers, and mini-toys, using simple techniques and instruments.” Crochet expert Deena al-Falasi led the classes. The celebration included the opening of a photo gallery and distribution of certificates. More than 150 male students participated in the programme which was supervised by the staff of the sports and recreation section at the university. The activities included trips, sessions and fitness classes. “These programmes enable the younger generation to advance their academic skills and strengthen their role as leaders in contributing to the community in which they live,” a varsity official said.
