In the summer of 2012, the New York Public Library will be hosting a variety of workshops for teachers in which they can explore education outside the classroom. Workshops: Adam Shatz - Black Bohemia: Poetry, Painting, and Jazz on the Lower East Side July 16th – July 20th Laura Shapiro -Writing Food: A Workshop in Creative Non-?ction July 23 – July 27 Rivka Galchen – Liberating Constraints: A Creative Writing Workshop July 30 – August 3 These week-long workshops are free and include breakfast and lunch, a $300 stipend, course materials, and a private office with computer. There is also the possibility of graduate school credit. The deadline for applying is April 9th and each workshop is limited to 15 places. Additional programs are also available in more directly education-related areas. In the following, also free, seminar teachers will delve into the Library’s collections to illustrate the way in which primary sources narrate the early twentieth century. Teachers will learn how to better engage their students in studies of history, by leading them to draw their own conclusions and develop the ability to form modern comparisons.
