State of Kuwait has nominated former Education Minister Dr. Hassan Al-Ibrahim for UNESCO\'s Executive Council membership, the Gulf country\'s permanent representative to the UN agency said Friday. Dr. Ali Al-Tarrah said Al-Ibrahim was highly appreciated by many countries, hoping his candidacy would mark return of Kuwait to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Orgazation\'s Executive Council. \"State of Kuwait\'s victory in the Executive Council\'s seat during UNESCO\'s general conference due on November 5, will grant it a great role to contribute to drawing the general policies that will help UNESCO improve its program and achieve its noble objectives,\" Al-Tarrah told KUNA on sidelines of the Executive Council\'s meetings. The 58-member Executive Council is like UNESCO\'s board. Its duties and responsibilities are derived from the constituent Charter and recommendations of the UNESCO\'s general conference. Meanwhile, Al-Tarrah said Rashad Farha, Djibouti\'s candidate for UNESCO\'s director general\'s post, was backed by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The director general is elected for a four-year term that can be renewed once.
