Iranian researchers from Uremia University succeeded in the production of a new type of nanocoating to increase the corrosion resistance of copper.
The nanocoating can be produced through a simple and cheap method by using eco-friendly materials.
Copper is widely used in various industries, including water transference and steam vessels in plants and electronic industries. Despite its desirable properties such as high electrical and thermal conductivity, copper is intensely affected by corrosion in acidic gaseous media, specially in the presence of sulfide ion or its compounds, including ammonia or amines. In this study, the researchers tried to prevent the corrosion of copper specifically in aqueous media by using nanocoatings.
The proposed nanocoatings can be synthesized at the shortest possible time with the minimum energy and cost. In addition, eco-friendly materials have been used in the production of the nanocoatings, which doubles the importance of its application.
Results of the research can be used in the modification of applicable electrodes in the measurement of materials through electrochemical method. According to thermal tests, the coating has high thermal resistance, and therefore, this product can be used in electronic industries too.
In general, results confirmed the increase in corrosion resistance of copper deposited with the nanocoatings. Among the achievements of this stud, mention can be made of the synthesis of nanoparticles and nano-sheets through a simple, cost effective, fast and repeatable method, which can be used in corrosion control of copper.
Results of the research have been published in Corrosion Science, vol. 91, issue 1, 2015, pp. 129-139.
