After actress Lucy Lawless stirred the waters at this year's Comic-Con in support of a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot, it appears that the project is in the works.
According to sources via The Hollywood Reporter, the beloved drama is in its early stages of returning to television after 20 years. NBC and NBC Universal International are reportedly in search of a writer to pen a "modern reboot" of the original Lawless-led adventure series.
Reports indicate that the show is being planned for a 2016 debut. If it is indeed in the works, it is still too soon to know who will take the place of the show's iconic characters including Xena (Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor).
Confirmations from the production companies have yet to be made.
At this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, Lawless told HitFix of her undying support of a Xena reboot saying she doesn't know "what the holdup is."
"It's about who's got the rights," she said. "But that's a piss poor excuse anymore. I think they just...find who's got the rights," she demanded, "Freakin' pay it. It's better to have 80 percent of something than 100 percent of nothing."
"Don't waste this opportunity. Reinvigorate that franchise," she continued. "They're fools not to bring it back."
