The UN Department of Public Information (DPI) has unveiled a new web portal in all six official languages to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the world body, Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman, said here Wednesday.
"The website presents a gateway to the rich history of the UN -- its founding, its eight secretaries-general, and its many milestones over the decades," Haq said at a daily news briefing here.
"The organization of information will allow the public to easily find information, activities, and products related to the 70th anniversary of the Organization," he added.
The United Nations officially came into existence on Oct. 24, 1945, when the UN Charter, drawn up by 50 countries in San Francisco earlier that year, has been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States and a majority of the other signatories.
Under the UN Charter, the official languages of the United Nations are Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Arabic was later added as an official language of the UN General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council.
