Kate del Castillo is to play the first lady of Mexico in the new Netflix series Ingobernable, the streaming giant announced.
Del Castillo will play Irene Urzua, "a woman with a strong personality, conviction and clear ideas" and a character who is capable of "creating a president, leaving a president and killing a president," a news release said.
"I absolutely love the role. It's challenging, it's risky, it's compelling. The storyline and the cast are excellent. The kind of content Netflix is synonymous with. I am so happy to be part of the team," del Castillo said in a statement Thursday. "This is like nothing people have seen me in before and I can't wait to start this journey with Netflix and Ingobernable."
"Netflix is committed to the creation of high-quality, Spanish-language, original series for Mexico, United States, Latin America and the world. We are thrilled to be working with one of Latin America's biggest and most talented stars, Kate del Castillo, on Ingobernable, our next original series produced in Mexico," added Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer.
The 20-episode series will start shooting in Mexico early next year and Ingobernable will be available exclusively on Netflix later in 2016.
