30 July marks the birthday of Farid Shawqi, one of the foremost Egyptian actors and filmmakers. Google celebrates with a doodle combining a depiction of a few roles played by Shawqi.
Born in 1920, Shawqi played in over 360 films, with his first appearances dating back to the 1940s and continuing until the 1990s.
Among Shawqi's most notable roles are in films directed by the renowned director Youssef Chahine (1926-2008), in Bab El Hadid (Cairo Station, 1958), Al-Ard (The Land, 1969) and Iskandariya Leih? (Alexandria, Why?, 1971). Equally, Shawqi created memorable roles in many other movies such as Salah Abouseif's Bidaya wa Nihaya (A Beginning and an End, 1961).
Shawqi also performed in theatre and television series. He wrote film scripts and produced over 20 movies. Shawqi passed away on 27 July 1998.
Google has often doodled on anniversaries, and shed light on many renowned international events and figures.
On several occasions the doodles included Egypt theme, such as doodles about Egypt's elections in the 2012.
The most recent Egypt-related doodle was posted on 20 July 2014, celebrating prominent Egyptian author Sohair El-Qalamawy's 103rd birthday.
