Lebanese journalists and media icons have praised Kuwait's humanitarian role on Syria ahead of hosting international donors in a third aid-pledging conference for displaced Syrians.
On these efforts, Awni Kaaki praised the huge role assumed by the state Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development in providing assistance to impoverished nations.
As Kuwait prepares to host a third donors' event in three years for Syria after the earlier two conventions helped raise pledges worth USD 3.9 billion, Kaaki, publisher of the daily newspaper, "Ash-Sharq," said it was initiatives like these that earned His Highness the well-deserved UN "Humanitarian Leader" title.
"In the Arab world Kuwait was and continues to be steadfast in its support for those in need. It is at the forefront of nations that came forward to assist Lebanon financially and politically," he said.
Journalist and writer Rajeh Khouri said the event, also dubbed Kuwait III, is regarded very important and this reflects the position Kuwait has assumed in this domain.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon has requested that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah host the three events in Kuwait due to the huge donations Kuwait made at the last two donors' conferences, (USD 300 million and USD 500 million), added Khouri.
The Lebanese journalist conceded that the event's importance lies in the ever-increasing numbers of Syrian refugees pouring into neighbouring countries, including his own, due to the growing intensity of violence in their own country.
He went on to describe Kuwait's role as "fundamental" on the matter.
For her part, media personality Marlene Wehbeh expects that the international community's eyes will be fixated on the outcomes of the event and what it will do for the refugees, who have reached over 12.2 million.
Hosting the third such event in Kuwait for a third year in a row illustrates the country's position on these endeavors, she said, adding that it represents a model for other nations.
