The presenter of a radio news programme in Honduras, Fausto Flores Valle, was hacked to death on Sunday (11 March). He was cycling home from his station, Radio Alegre de Colón in Sabá, in the country's north-eastern department of Colón, when he got into a violent argument. The man is said to have struck him 18 times with a machete before fleeing. He was not robbed. Flores, 54, was the second journalist to be killed since the start of the year in Honduras, which is ranked 135th out of 179 countries in the latest Reporters Without Borders (RSF) press freedom index. A total of 26 journalists have been killed in Honduras in the past decade, 19 of them since a coup in June 2009. "This particularly foul murder is the latest example of the chaotic security situation in Honduras," said an RSF statement. It added: "What can be expected from the investigation when impunity endures in all the previous murders of journalists."
