Candidates running for mid-term elections for positions in Egypt’s Journalists’ Union have begun their campaigns. Walls inside the union’s headquarters in Cairo are already covered with candidates’ posters and banners. One hopeful has claimed the slogan: “Defending press freedom and liberating it from authority.” Elections for union chairman and six board positions will take place on March 1. Some participants have meanwhile expressed fears that the March date may be too soon, causing some candidates to pull out.
